{"id":205,"date":"2009-03-15T20:36:01","date_gmt":"2009-03-15T11:36:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/triplefstudio.com\/yokoso\/?p=205"},"modified":"2009-03-15T20:36:46","modified_gmt":"2009-03-15T11:36:46","slug":"some-final-thai-thoughts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.triplefstudio.com\/yokoso\/2009\/03\/15\/some-final-thai-thoughts\/","title":{"rendered":"Some final Thai thoughts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--StartFragment--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I had a list of topics that I wanted to cover in my Thai posting.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>I got most of them covered in my entry, but there are few I didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t get covered.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>Gender fluidity<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">One thing I noticed in Thailand was gender was very fluid.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m not talking about sleazy bar areas where <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ladyboy\">ladyboy<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0shows are the norm.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Just in normal, every day life, sometimes gender was difficult to determine.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Was that beautiful girl and guy?<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Was that odd looking man a woman?<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>There were definitely times where Tomo and I would ask each other, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153male or female?\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>It was a very interesting to see in everyday life \u00e2\u20ac\u201c the group of security guards at the airport, the maid who came to turn down our room in Koh Samui, the server at Ice Monster, and any number of other places.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>Plastic surgery<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Apparently Thailand is also known for plastic surgery.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>I didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t know that.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>We saw a lot of Thai women with Angelina Jolie-esque lips that didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t quite fit.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>But the icing on the cake was two women on our flight who looked like they had a little \u00e2\u20ac\u0153work\u00e2\u20ac\u009d done in Thailand.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>I looked at them and thought, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153can they really think that is sexy?\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>I just don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t get it.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>I understand vanity, and I certainly want to look good, but where does their perception of looking good come from?<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>That\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s what I don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t get.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Wear funky clothes if you want, get a cool hairstyle, but don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t inject a bunch of junk in your lips to make them look like \u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 like what?<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Puffy lips?<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>Sigh.<span>\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>I could also go on and on about bad wigs on men in Japan, but I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll pass on that for now.<\/p>\n<p><!--EndFragment--><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I had a list of topics that I wanted to cover in my Thai posting.\u00c2\u00a0 I got most of them covered in my entry, but there are few I didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t get covered. \u00c2\u00a0 Gender fluidity One thing I noticed in Thailand was gender was very fluid.\u00c2\u00a0 I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m not talking about sleazy bar areas where ladyboy\u00c2\u00a0shows &hellip;
